Sunday Studio Visit: Experimenting with Fire

**UPDATE** There are earrings and a necklace from this saggar bonfire currently available in my ETSY shop! Just in time for Christmas!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Excitement abounds again this Sunday for your studio visit!!

After last weekends pit firing I’ve caught the pyro bug and had to play with open fire again this weekend …. under the pretence of burning off before summer hits – being responsible and all!

So, a few weeks ago we had some really high winds here in Dunnstown and across Victoria in general, and we had some trees blow down, so there were lots of small branches and leaves that needed to be burned off…. I made some beads and a few test pots for some experimenting I wanted to do and ‘bonfire’ here we come…

Below are some pics of the jewellery beads and a trinket box straight from the saggars (tin cans) scooped from the ashes this afternoon, not yet cleaned or polished. During the week I will publish a post with the finished polished pieces and some pics and explanations of the experiments I did: a slight hint – trying to duplicate naked raku and horsehair firing by using a bonfire (and pit firing in the future).

Stay tuned to unravel the mystery!!

  1. Hi Dawn, do you put holes in the tins so there is no explosions? I do lots of ‘eco dying’ on wool and silk with gum leaves, this looks and feels very similar. I did some pit firings years and years ago at Un but they were more hit or miss these seem a bit more controlled with the print and very exciting. Yvette x
